Pisces
A3 Original • 11.7 x 16.5 inches (29.7 x 42 cm), Ink on Paper
The last constellation of the zodiac, Pisces is a water sign symbolized by two fish - Life and Soul - swimming in opposite directions. Here, their tales meet in the middle, at the nexus of reality and fantasy: this is the aspect of the sign’s duality that I really wanted to reinforce throughout the piece.
The fish are peering towards each other through that middle point because even though they swim away from each other, they also circle each other, in the same way one’s dreams inform the sway of life and vice versa.
What’s more, the manner in which they circle each other here is like the winding of a double helix: Life and Soul, though they may clash, are two strands of the same DNA that make Pisces who they are.
The subtle outline of a human eye at this point also serves to denote the clarity of sight derived from focusing one’s attention on treading the middle ground between the abstract and the concrete.
In terms of design, I was really inspired by the betta fish, whose long and beautifully intricate tails and fins capture the eye and evoke movement even when they’re still. But just as with reality and fantasy, it can be hard to see where they begin and end - hopefully, in some ways, they never do.
