Dog Is Love
A3 Original • 11.7 x 16.5 inches (29.7 x 42 cm), Watercolor, Ink, Acrylic on Paper
This commission is a portrait of a very sweet elder Labrador I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know in her later years, and my celebration of the divine love our dogs gift us with every day that we are blessed to have them in our lives.
As I have found that making art serves as a vehicle to process my own feelings, this piece is also greatly inspired by the love I felt for my own lab, Stella Luna, whose painful passing many years ago I’d never had the fortitude to fully grieve until now.
Like all my art, this piece is full of symbols, dualities, and hidden planes of meaning, with a particular focus on the passage of time shown by abstract gradients - a sunset over verdant fields turning through the seasons. Iridescent and metallic colors serve to represent the astronomical/ethereal plane (with iridescent black being the void of space that is a black lab), contrasting with the matted colors of the earthly/physical plane. The cosmic juncture where these two planes meet (and where glittery life magic happens), is where a dog’s paws touch the ground.
